On June 27, 2019, Hon. Keizo Takemi, member of the House of Councillors and JCIE senior fellow, was appointed as the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in recognition of his many contributions to global health over the past decade and his dedication to promoting sustainable health systems that leave no one behind. The announcement was made by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus prior to a dialogue for Japanese global health experts held in Tokyo.

Dr. Tedros, who was in Japan for the G20 Osaka Summit, gave the opening remarks at the appointment ceremony, where he commented on Japan’s status as a global leader for universal health coverage.
